How Does IVF Work? From the First Consultation to Embryo Transfer

A clear overview of IVF assessment, preparation, egg retrieval, laboratory care, embryo transfer and follow-up.

How Does IVF Work? From the First Consultation to Embryo Transfer

Couples considering IVF often want to understand how treatment progresses. Fixed schedules found online can be misleading. An IVF plan is shaped by health history, age, ovarian reserve, semen assessment and previous treatment results.

This article provides general information and does not replace individual medical advice.

What is reviewed at the first consultation?

The physician asks how long pregnancy has been planned, reviews previous treatment, pregnancy history, operations and regular medication. Bringing earlier ultrasound, hormone and semen analysis results may be helpful.

Which tests may be requested before IVF?

Testing is not identical for everyone. Ultrasound, hormone tests and, when indicated, assessment of the uterine cavity may be considered for the woman. Semen analysis is a basic assessment for the man. Further hormonal, genetic or urological evaluation may be requested according to the findings.

Ovarian stimulation and monitoring

When appropriate, medication may be used for controlled ovarian stimulation. The dose is selected individually. Follicular development is followed with ultrasound and sometimes blood tests. Visit dates may change according to the body’s response.

Egg retrieval

When follicles reach an appropriate stage, final medication and egg-retrieval timing are planned. Instructions about fasting, medication and arrival time are provided beforehand. Not every follicle contains a mature egg, and not every egg fertilises.

Sperm preparation and the laboratory stage

A semen sample is prepared on the day of retrieval. Conventional IVF or ICSI may be considered when medically indicated. After fertilisation, embryos are observed at defined intervals by the embryology team.

How is embryo transfer planned?

Transfer timing depends on embryo development, the endometrium and the individual plan. A fresh transfer may be possible in some circumstances; in others, embryos may be frozen for transfer in a later cycle.

After embryo transfer

The clinical team explains medication and the pregnancy-test date. The presence or absence of symptoms does not reliably indicate the outcome. Prescribed medication should not be stopped without medical advice.

How long does IVF take?

Timing varies. Additional assessment, ovarian response, embryo development and the decision between fresh and frozen transfer may all affect the schedule.

Preparing for the first appointment

  • Bring previous test and treatment records.
  • List regular medicines and supplements.
  • Share information about previous operations.
  • Write down your questions beforehand.
